How to Communicate the Gospel

Monday, September 22nd, 2008 : By Hugh Williams

Note: what follows is not the approach we’re teaching in the Gospel Conversations class, but it’s good for a chuckle from the Jollyblogger:

The truth of the gospel is the principle article of all Christian doctrine… Most necessary is it that we know this article well, teach it to others and beat it into their heads continually. — Martin Luther

Just for fun… any captions you’d add to this picture?

“Have you ever heard of the Four Spiritual Laws?”

Conversational Evangelism & Apologetics

Sunday, September 14th, 2008 : By Hugh Williams

Homework for this week’s Gospel Conversations class is to listen to a message from Sovereign Grace Ministries called “Conversational Apologetics.” Besides being made available free of charge, it’s lively, funny, easy to listen to, and worth taking in more than once.

(It seems to me it could just as easily have been called “Conversational Evangelism” — this is one of those times when the line between evangelism and apologetics is so blurry it’s not worth trying to pick it apart.)

The message was delivered by Michael Ramsden, the European director of Ravi Zacharias International Ministries.

Todd Bentley and Wife have Separated

Friday, August 15th, 2008 : By Dan Miller

Disclaimer: I didn’t realize that Hugh was going to blog regarding Mr. Bentley. Although I thought about not posting, I realize that we took very different angles in our approach to the subject. While Hugh’s post is much prettier than mine (oh’ he is so good!), I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last night! (just kidding, but it’s all I got!)

If you have been hanging around Grace for the last few months, you have certainly been exposed to the teaching we have been moving through regarding developing discernment when it comes to spiritual gifting. As part of this development, we actually assigned a church-wide project using the actions of Todd Bentley and the “Lakeland …

Press the Clutch Before You Shift the Gears

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008 : By Hugh Williams

Evangelists who don’t shift gears smoothly in conversation tend to use the “can’t find it—grind it” strategy.

I don’t drive stick. I did—once, in 1991. I learned what “can’t find it, grind it” means. I also learned about stalls. A one-mile drive took more time than walking the same distance. That was enough. I like my automatic transmission just fine, thankyouverymuch.

If only personal evangelism came with an automatic transmission… too often sharing the Gospel is more like my ordeal driving stick: lots of stalls, abrupt stops and starts, and sounds that make you cringe. Oh, and you often don’t get very far, either.

Joe Thorn considers this

J.I. Packer on Homosexuality

Sunday, July 20th, 2008 : By Dan Miller

Listen as J.I. Packer draws to a tight focus the central issue in regard to homosexuality, the Gospel itself. Dr. Packer makes a very lucid argument for why it is the very Gospel of Christ that is at stake when it comes to the issue of same-sex relationships.

Any Good Christian Will Vote for…

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008 : By Dan Miller

There are few issues like politics that inspire question marks in the minds of Christians. Questions like, Do I vote for a candidate who is “pro-choice” when the other candidate is not only “pro-choice” but “pro-tax”, “pro-big government,” “pro-liberal social programs”, etc? Living in a society in which we are given the freedom to participate in the political process in turn demands that we learn to think through finding balance in how we cast our vote as a follower of Christ. Let’s face it, to abstain completely from voting because a candidate holds a view that you or me would consider to be “unchristian” will leave us with no candidate at all. A person with this …

Hello from West Virginia!

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008 : By Dan Miller

As you probably know, we have a team “on mission” with Mustard Seeds and Mountains in McDowell County, West Virginia. We have set up this blog to serve as a message board since “up in the hollers” there is practically no cell phone coverage.

The first two entries come from my wife, Vicki, who happens to have three of our kids with her - Ben, David, and Alexa.

Special Thanks to Will “LEGS” Bowman (team member and hill climbing extraordinaire) for making this connection possible!

Is the Message of Jesus Trumped by the Teaching of Paul?

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008 : By Dan Miller

When we speak that there must be a necessary change when a person trusts in Christ there is often an undercurrent of distinction between the message of Jesus and the teaching of Paul. Advocates for looking toward Paul for the Gospel (and not the messages of Christ) will appeal to the sections of Scripture like Romans 3 and 4 because it is in these chapters we see the clearest picture of justification by faith alone. The reasoning goes something like this, “if there must be fruits of obedience to express a person truly being justified, then Paul would have most certainly included that teaching in these chapters.” At this point, a citation of a teacher(s) such as …

Is Repentance Required for Salvation?

Monday, June 2nd, 2008 : By Dan Miller

There are those who would have you believe that trust in Christ is all that is needed when it comes to the foundational element in starting a relationship with God. Furthermore, if anything is added to this basic formula the Gospel message will become corrupted. Consider the following:

In the same way [as first-century legalism], the most telling modern assaults on the integrity of the Gospel do not deny the cruciality of faith in Christ. On the contrary, they insist on it. But to faith are added other conditions, or provisos, by which the essential nature of the Gospel is radically transformed. Often, in fact, a distinction is drawn between the kind of faith which saves and the kind which does

The Either/Or Gospel

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008 : By Hugh Williams

There is only one reason to be a Christian: because it’s true. —Francis Schaeffer

Toward the end of the “Does God Exist?” teaching from April 20 (which was re-recorded and includes extra material we didn’t cover in church—call it the “director’s cut”), I offered the following “either/or” version of the Gospel:

Either God exists, or he doesn’t. The Gospel says he exists, so… Either we’re accountable to him for our lives, or we’re not. The Gospel says we’re accountable to God for our lives, so… Either we’re in trouble with God, or we’re not. The Gospel says we’re in trouble, so… Either God offers forgiveness, or he doesn’t. The Gospel says he offers forgiveness through faith in Jesus
