Did C.S. Lewis Make a Decision for Christ?

Sunday, October 11th, 2009 : By Hugh Williams

The following comes from Cross-Examination, an interview with C.S. Lewis, held on the 7th May 1963 in Lewis’s rooms in Magdalene College, Cambridge. The interviewer is Mr. Sheldon E. Wirt of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association Ltd. The interview can be found in its entirety in God in the Dock: Essays on Theology and Ethics.

Mr Wirt:

In your book Surprised by Joy you remark that you were brought into the Faith kicking and struggling and resentful, with eyes darting in every direction looking for an escape. You suggest that you were compelled, as it were, to become a Christian. Do you feel that you made a decision at the time of your conversion?

Lewis:

I would not put it that way.

Screwtape Writes Again

Friday, June 19th, 2009 : By Hugh Williams

My Dear Wormwood,

I have counseled you in the past to teach your patient and his family to hop from church to church like gluttons at the stations of a buffet, or even better, like spiritual connoisseurs with an impossibly refined idea of “how church ought to be done.” The aim was to have them go to church with the mind of a critic or a spectator — anything but a pupil, which, alas, is precisely what you have allowed to happen.

As your people have become thoroughly settled into a church, I see no point in your continuing your feckless attempts to start them church-shopping again. Humility and earnestness of the sort we see in your people calls for different measures. …

Doubting Your Doubts

Monday, January 12th, 2009 : By Hugh Williams

Twice in the last week I’ve found myself giving this advice to people: “Doubt your doubts.” It comes from C. S. Lewis and I have found it helpful over the years to apply it with resolve.

Neither your strongest beliefs nor your shakiest doubts are infallible. Often, something we take as absolutely guaranteed turned out to be less certain than we thought. The same goes for our fears and doubts.

It’s easy to think of all the doubts that point toward bad news as rock-solid, and the reasons you have for hope to be just wishful thinking. But when you’re in that state of uncertainty, it’s best to just confess the one thing you can be sure about: “I don’t

Audio Books for Under $10 (the Bible too!)

Friday, June 13th, 2008 : By Hugh Williams

ChristianAudio.com is having a $9.49 sale on lots of downloadable books from June 13-22.

One notable inclusion in that list is the The Listener’s Bible NIV, narrated by Max McLean. If you don’t have a Bible you can listen to, here’s a great chance to pick one up at almost 90% off. This is no cheesy production — I have McLean’s ESV reading and it’s fantastic. I highly recommend McLean’s work.

Some others:
