Guilt and Shame

Tuesday, February 20, 2018 by Pat Dirrim Leave a Comment

As parents, disciplining our children is one of our most serious and challenging duties. Without it, our kids will have little or no sense of right or wrong and will, in essence, simply run amuck. Conversely, though, discipline done poorly can be crushing to their spirits and devastating to their hope. As parents we must diligently rebuke and discipline them for their sinful and/or errant choices. One of the toughest parts of this process is in recalibrating their hope once we’ve drawn attention to their failure(s) or shortcoming(s). We need to equip them to deal with both the guilt they rightly experience for what they’ve done as well as the shame they may feel for what they did. To that end, I highly encourage this article dealing with this very topic. In short, “We must deal with our shame by reminding ourselves of how God has dealt with our guilt.”
